Miro frequently depicted birds as subjects throughout his life. These free and fanciful subjects allowed Miro's imagination to literally take flight. Nicholas and Elena Calas, writing in the catalog raisonne of Miro's lithographs, commented on the series, "The path of man and bird is guided by the crescent moon or rising sun in their migration of body and spirit. The barriers between observation and imagination are eclipsed." Miro incorporates the sun and the moon in two of the five images in the suite, and the bird appears reaching toward the heavens in each successive image, set in varying environments, surrounded by celestial symbols, as it takes its sustenance.
