About Louis Broder
The art publisher Louis Broder was active in the 20th century as a collaborator and publisher of important graphic works . He commissioned artists such as Picasso, Braque, Jean Art, Jacques Villon, Andre Masson and many other to create interpretations of literary works, poems or conceptual ideas through a variety of media.
An important collaboration of Louis Broder included the publication of "Un Poem dans Chaque Livre (1956)," which illustrated the work of the popular surrealist poet, Paul Eluard with prints by Pablo Picasso, Jean Arp, Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, Andre Masson, Jacques Villon and others.
Acquisition of the Collection
Broder began to work with Miro in 1956 and published several editions of graphic works. His collaboration with Miro through the world famous Mourlot lithographic atelier in Paris resulted in the 1970 and 1971 publication of four historically significant and highly desirable suites of color lithographs. These works were offered in the early 1970s through a gallery in Paris, and then only sporadically over the ensuing years. The remaining unsold examples were held by the Broder estate for 35 years after his passing until, in 2004, Park West acquired the entire collection. These hand-signed, numbered (or annotated) color lithographs, archived since the time of publication, were in pristine condition with direct provenance from the publisher’s collection.
Park West became aware of the offering from the Broder estate through Sotheby's New York, when the release of the works was announced as a private treaty sale in their seasonal print auction catalog (October 29, 30 2004). The works included examples of lithographs from four different suites published by Louis Broder:
